Hereford Phoenix 1-0 Worcester City
County Cup Semi-Final
18/2/07
We travelled to Hereford Phoenix looking to continue our long unbeaten run
and progress to a cup final against Hereford Pegasus, aware that this would
be a close, competitive game.
From the start this proved to be the case, with the opening 10 minutes
becoming a tight, scrappy affair, with most of the play situated in midfield
areas. However after these opening stages both teams had half chances and
the game became stretched, switching from end to end at a fast,
entertaining ace. In truth, this was Worcester's best and most dominant
period of the game, with Emma and Louise going close, as well as an Annie
Highway corner very nearly being headed in to the Hereford goal.
Just before
half time, after some neat play in the midfield, Louise cracked an 18 yard
shot onto the bar, it bounced down but was well cleared, shortly to be
followed by the referee's whistle.
Hereford started the second half in very positive fashion and a great run
from the centre forward was only halted by a fantastic Jodie Bennet save.
The game again became end to end, with Hereford's mobile and neat attacking
play resulting into some good positions without a real clear cut chance
being created, though the general feeling was that the game would be decided
by the odd goal.
A Worcester attack down the left saw Hazel slip Lisa
through but just as it appeared the game would swing in our favour the
Hereford goalkeeper closed down well and was able to make the save. Then,
with around 10 minutes left, the decisive goal did come, unfortunately for
us a great ball in was headed home to put Hereford one up. This was followed
by frantic attempts to level the game, in truth though, this caused the game
to be even more open and in spite of some good attacking positions, Hereford
did have the only real other chance of the game.
I felt the game was a very even contest, which we shaded in the first half
and where Hereford had slightly the better of the second, in a mirror image
of the first meeting between the two sides, on that occassion we were happy
to accept our result, but here we have to congratulate Hereford. There are
no hard feelings over the result as they played a very good game, and we are
left to reflect on an opportunity missed.
The next game sees another
chance though, against a very, very good Birmingham Athletic side. That
is all the team are focussing on and are certainly not getting carried away
with any silly title talk!!! Hopefully the disappointment from this
weekend and the motivation to go away and play against a side who pass and
move the ball around so well can spur us on this weekend...
Worcester City 3-1 Headless Cross
4/02/07
We entertained Headless Cross looking to extend our unbeaten run that goes back to September. We knew, however that Headless would be eager to amend their result against us in December where we won 6-0, and expected a tough game. The match started at a relatively slow pace, with some good, neat passing by Worcester and perhaps due some good defending and a little hesitation in the final third, it took some time before we were really able to create any sort of opening. As the half wore on though, we became more on-top and took a deserved lead when Annie ran on a pass and chipped the ball home. From that point, we pretty much dominated the rest of the half, keeping the ball slightly better but just failing too often with our final ball.
The second half began much more positively, all over the pitch the players chased and hassled the opposition and earned some good attacking positions, Hazel benefited from some neat interplay and stuck home our second and in truth, the killer goal. Following this was likely our best spell of the game, especially down the right hand side, where April and Emma were getting into some great crossing positions. The third goal from Louise wasn't long in coming and another well worked move down the right saw her strike the ball low into the net. With the team, Dani in particular, defending well, it seemed the game would peter out, from our point of view it did and we were left perhaps a little disappointed that we were unable to keep a clean sheet, but against a side with dangerous strikers and good battling qualities you have to switch on at all times, and a consolation goal game with around 5 minutes remaining.
The team played pretty well in the game, they simply must work upon the little things, finishing off moves and ensuring passes reach their intended targets a little more, we are taking one step and one game at a time though, and in a league where it is so close and there are many high quality teams, the next game is all you can look towards, as no one can be taken lightly.
Studley 0-2 Worcester City
28/01/07
We were under no illusions that this would be a tough game. Studley ran us very close in the reverse fixture, they have decent players throughout the team and are a very well-run club, playing them on any occasion is a tough game, but without Jodie, Louise and Jess as well as fitness doubts over Sarah Major and Lisa, a few players were moved into somewhat unfamiliar positions.
The first half was a really strange one, we dominated the first fifteen minutes, Annie was perhaps allowed a little too much space at times and created a few opportunities and having hit the bar and created a few more situations, we deservedly took the lead through April, another young player who's really coming through for us. It looked as if we might build upon this lead following the goal as we continued to come forward with purpose; however Studley then took over, though not creating gilt-edged chances, aside from a dangerous free kick, they moved the ball around well and at times made us look a little disjointed. Lisa was hurt and had to come off, which left us with only 11 players.
For perhaps the second half time this season, it was clear that stronger performances were needed for all of the players, and that we had to get back to passing the ball around the way that we could. A few players were under performing, thankfully for us, Cat in goal and Sarah McDowell were performing and had really ensured that chances were at a minimum for Studley.
The team talk seemed to work at first, with greater passing play from Worcester and a few opportunities later, Hazel played in Debbie to smash home the second. Just like Vicky last week, Debbie really deserved her goal, having been a fantastic member of the squad for us. Sarah then was forced to leave the field and this left us with 10 players for the last 30 minutes or so, with Dani moving to centre back and a few more positional changes, we covered for it relatively well, a few long shots and a great chance for Studley where they were unlucky with a shot that hit the post, which was like an action replay of Annie’s earlier shot, meant that Studley never stopped pressing for a way back in the game. However, Hazel up front held the ball up very well and fine performances from Sarah MacDowell, Kate and Cat who has been awesome all season, saw a 2-0 end result.
In spite of what must have been a cracking 1-1 draw between Hereford and Copeswood, we remain second on goals scored now to Birmingham Athletic, another quality team. There is no resentment at all that they got 6 points back after appealing an earlier deduction, however my only wish is that next time something like this could be sorted in less than the four months it took for the decision to be made...this week we face headless cross and 'Athletic face Copeswood and West Brom, Hereford facing tricky looking away games, what a cracking title race in this league though, something I hope we can play our part in over the next few months.
Worcester City 6-0 Leamington Lions
21/01/07
The performance in this game, especially in the fist half, was of a very high quality. After an opening 10 minutes where the game settled down, with both teams attacking sporadically. Annie slotted away our first goal and from there, there really was some super football played. A lovely bit of skill in the box after a sustained period of pressure, by April saw the ball eventually fed out to Emma on the edge of the box, who thumped in a 20 yard shot. The next goal was also a long range drive, though of a different kind.
Vicky collected the ball on the right wing and delivered a great ball into the box, so great that it sailed over the 'keepers head into the goal. When you put the ball into the right areas, then goals happen and this goal, in spite of its fortunate occurrence, is no less than our captain has deserved this season. A series of attacks then came to nothing as Leamington defended well and the goalkeeper, who was magnificent against us earlier in the season, also saved well from April. The goal of the game followed though, as Hazel unselfishly interchanged with Annie, who thumped in the 4th. As half time came, it was a case of keeping our feet on the ground and continuing to play good football, as the score line to this point was a fair reflection of the game.
After a few changes at half time, the second half saw us continue to attack, however on many occasions attacks were thwarted by the flag of the linesman (and correctly so)as well as the defence. After this followed a 15 minute period where Leamington , to their immense credit, attacked threatening a goal. Hazel managed to break away though twice towards the end of the game as Leamington tired to give the score line a more emphatic look, the game would not have been right with a Hazel goal or two today and the game ended, with us drawing level on points with Copeswood at the top of the league, albeit having played a game more and with an inferior goal difference. Hazel, Annie and April were our star performers today, utilising their pace and attacking skills brilliantly.
Knowle 2-3 Worcester City
14/01/07
This was a very tough game where, though we played without the likes of Emma and Jodie would have to go down in my opinion as the worst performance of the season so far.
The first twenty five minutes were as eventful as you are ever likely to see! We started off playing some absolutely superb football, with the wingers and the full backs getting forward at will. Annie and Hazel in particular creating all sorts of opportunities and really, it looked as if the game could be a one sided affair. However, Knowle defended resiliently and on their first real break into the Worcester defensive third, gained a free kick that was superbly taken and put away well into the Worcester Goal.
After 5 minutes of Knowle pressure, it was our turn to score against the run of play through a Hazel shot that trickled into the far corner. After Louise quickly put us in the lead, I felt sure that the game would now settle down and we would dictate the game as we had done in the early exchanges. However, within minutes parity was restored through a headed goal from what was Knowles’s third meaningful attack of the game. What followed in the next twenty minutes before half time was a period where Worcester attacked and created some good chances, notably the mother of all goalmouth scrambles shortly before half time. As much as we had attacked though, at that point I felt a draw was a fair reflection of the game as Knowle's defending and the threat that they posed when they did go forward was great. We scored shortly before half time after another scramble, Louise added to her season's tally and took us 3-2 up at half time.
After a few strong words at half time (!) the second half kicked off with the game being quite an even, midfield battle with very few chances created, in complete contrast to the first half. As the game went on, one or two more chances were created, Cat in goal dealt well with the high balls into the box and the game petered out really. The result was deserved and I can accept the victory, however again we were not at our best and Knowle, who will cause teams plenty of problems with their strong play and good delivery into the box, caused us one or two more problems in the first half than I would have liked. Louise, Annie and Jess were our star players in the game; however performances will need to be improved individually and collectively if a title challenge is to be maintained.
Hereford Phoenix 0-1 Worcester City
7/01/07
Unfortunately this fixture was rearranged at late notice due to our pitch being waterlogged; I'd like to thank Hereford for offering to play the game over there and taking the time to find us a pitch, which given the weather conditions was some achievement. We travelled to Hereford , knowing that we would be in for a tough game against a high flying team who have bagged plenty of goals this season.
The game proved to be as close as expected with Hereford attacking well with pace, although not really troubling the Worcester goal, the same could be said at the other end, too - until a fantastic half volley from Annie flew into the top corner, giving us a lead after half an hour. An equally fantastic drive by the Hereford forward hit our bar shortly after as the game became stretched before the break. As half time came, the game was very even and it was apparent that Hereford would attack until the end.
The second half was dominated by Worcester , chances came at more frequent intervals than the first half, Hazel twice, Louise and Debbie all going close and in spite of the weather conditions, good football was now being played. Later in the game though, we were nearly made to pay for our missed chances as Hereford continued to press in search of an equaliser, in fact with 5 minutes left a close range attempt was deflected onto the post by Jodie to deny Hereford a draw.
Overall I felt this was a very close game that was played in difficult conditions, Hereford will clearly finish much nearer the top than the bottom though and in close games, moments of quality like those produced by Annie and Jodie are the difference between 3 points and none and for the first game back after Christmas, to not concede against such a fine attacking side and to collect three more points, in spite of perhaps not playing at our best, is a very decent return.
Worcester City 3-2 Birmingham Athletic
12/11/06
Where do I start with this game, it really had just about everything in it and I'm sure for anyone watching they would have come away having seen a cracking game played by two good teams and will have left with a positive impression of Women's football
The game in particular the first twenty minutes began with Birmingham on top, though Worcester played some good football in parts and had a few 'close calls' with through balls and an Annie Highway opportunity. Birmingham also created one or two chances, used the ball well in wide areas and forced a succession of well-taken set-pieces, something we were well aware of before the game, and I felt we did okay with throughout.
The first goal fell to Hazel who rounded the keeper following some good work from Louise, Annie and Emma on the edge of the area. What followed before half time I felt, was a period of good attacking football, coupled with some good hard work in wide areas from Natalie and Lisa. We passed the ball around well and caused Birmingham some problems, perhaps the one main criticism though was for all the possession that we enjoyed in these twenty minutes in the lead up until half time, the goalkeeper was tested on relatively few occasions.
After half time, the game continued for fifteen minutes really in the same fashion as the first ended, with the game being closely fought with Worcester enjoying the majority of both possession and territory without really doing enough to force that second goal, unfortunately, as we found last week, if you don’t take your chances, you get punished and like with the first goal against the run of play a defensive mix up presented Birmingham with an equaliser...it stunned Worcester and perhaps the opinion was from there, we would be unlikely to go on to win this game.
Before the game had a chance to settle down, the play switched to the other end. With the introduction of Jess Hemming and April Seers, renewed speed was brought to the game and a clear penalty was awarded after good play down the left, this was tucked away by Louise with twenty minutes left.
The game then took on a strange pattern with much end to end football being played. Birmingham are an excellent side and their crossing was as excellent as their movement up front and their covering play at the back as they went in search of an equaliser...like at West Brom the week before, it really looked as if entering the final eight minutes or so, Worcester had done the hard work, however a cross from the left was to prove too much for the defence and was duly tucked away....here we go again? Another 2 points snatched away late on against a top side? The remainder of the game followed the same frantic end to end pattern as the twenty minutes that went before it, the difference being that Worcester made their set piece, a superb ball in by Annie Highway count after an own goal was scored in the last minute of time, I felt that we deserved to win the game, I'm sure that there are more than a few people who disagree, but regardless of any opinion the result was only affected by what happened on the field. No contentious decisions, no fluke moments just a great game that one team can feel hard done by to lose, but Birmingham proved over 90 minutes that they will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season. Their management and players seem a quality, determined team.
The last comment this week would be reserved for the much publicised Mike Newell comments. In honesty, what was said has been said, at least he spoke his mind on the incident, so now we can see this is how certain people within the game view football. Clearly what he said was ill-timed, misjudged and incorrect, especially at our level we see female officials (more sometimes by accident on the line!!!) and they seem from what I can see to do every bit as good of a job as the men officiating, what we need to do now though is support female officials, as the popularity of the sport is increasing, the officials required will do also. Female footballers are a tough bunch though and now more than ever perhaps is a time when neutrals should pop along to see a game such as Sunday’s and perhaps then a few opinions will be changed about females in the sport, as the skills, the level of commitment and the general standard is of an excellent level.
West Brom Strollers 1-1 Worcester City
29/10/06
The game began in the worst possible way with the team arriving late to the game and the kick off being put back until 2.30pm , thanks to the generosity of the home team and the referee, who would have been well within their rights to demand the game started immediately. The team warmed up, and in a somewhat scrappy opening period created the better of the chances through Louise Holmes, Natalie Holmes. Amazingly Hazel Adams and Annie Highway contrived to miss chances in a goalmouth scramble in which some desperate defending kept the scores level, as both teams went in at 0-0 at half time it became apparent that this was going to be a close game and that one goal likely to settle it.
The second half followed a familiar pattern to the first and in spite of playing some excellent football at times, West Brom's defending was such that Worcester were mostly restricted to long shots, whilst at the other end, the back four appeared to have the game under control.
Around an hour into the game though, a ball delivered in by Hazel evaded the entire contents of the penalty box and flew into the bottom corner. On the balance of play it was a goal Worcester deserved and for the next ten minutes a few more chances were created, not when Louise was presented with the chance to lob the goalkeeper but the shot just evaded the cross bar.
The last twenty minutes was a different story though with us playing the more long ball game and though chances were at a premium, West Brom slowly asserted themselves more into the game forcing a few corners and a free kick which though contentious and re-taken resulted in a fantastic strike into the top corner of our goal....1-1.
The last eight or so minutes was frantic with both teams searching for the winner, but nothing really of any note chance wise....so it finished 1-1 and we trudged back to the changing room reflecting perhaps on 2 points lost, that said the football played in parts was good, especially considering the injuries the players were feeling and the defending was on the whole excellent, against a good team, who played well and fairly and in honesty who I feel will be in the top four at the season’s end, that is where I feel where we will also be, so long as a few mistakes are eradicated and perhaps better preparation is put in next
Worcester City 2-0 Studley Ladies
22/10/06
The game on Sunday against Studley provided a real test for the ladies as we were against unbeaten opposition and a team who are much-improved from last season. Coupled with the poor weather conditions, it was always going to be a tough afternoon.
A few changes to the team that beat Leamington two weeks ago saw the team play a 4-4-2 system and start the game in a positive manner that was rewarded with Louise Holme’s goal after 10 minutes. Lou has a habit of taking up positions within the box and again her timing of the run was fantastic.
The remainder of the half proved to be a scrappy affair played in heavy rain and with many hard challenges going in from both sides. It was a fair game though, that was keenly contested and Studley's attitude was credible throughout, as some excellent tackling at the back prevented us from extending our lead on several occasions. The team is a tougher nut to crack from last year though, and I felt we 'dug in’ very well.
The game opened up in the second half, we defended very well, in spite of facing a few dangerous set-pieces, the defence, with Sarah McDowell and Jodie Bennett outstanding withstood this and the team looked like extending the lead on occasions.
The killer goal came after a good run from Hazel Adams towards the end where a scramble ensued and luckily, after the ball appeared to get caught in the water (!) she slid in to notch another priceless goal. So the game finished 2-0 to the home side after a good, well-fought game and we continue to climb the table. With more tough games to come though, a similar level of performance will certainly be required!
Leamington Lions 1-2 Worcester City
8/10/06
The game against Leamington saw us pick up a much-needed and well deserved victory over Leamington Lions, to move up to eighth place in the table, albeit having only played two games.
The team played a more attacking formation, boosted by the return of Lisa McCarthy to the line-up, as well as Cat Farren deputising for Jodie Bennett in goal. It's fair to say to go in at half time at 0-0 was disappointing. From the first whistle, we attacked and created chances, Hazel, Lisa, Annie and Louise all going close on numerous occasions and eight corners being forced. To be fair, Leamington defended well and their goalkeeper made a string of excellent saves, however to say the game could and should have been out of sight at half time would be somewhat of an understatement! Having said this, throughout the team, the players produced an excellent level of performance, with some superb football being played.
At half time, it was clear that Leamington would regroup and come out a more confident side, this was the case, however the first ten minutes of the second half saw us continue to dominate. Annie and Natalie both going close with long-range efforts and more corners forced The breakthrough came with Louise slotting on the hour mark, there was a case for Leamington of feeling that it was offside, however given the balance of play and a later goal ruled offside after much debate, it seemed a fair outcome.
Leamington hit back almost immediately with a goal which really didn't look like coming, however the next 5 or so minutes saw them create two chances of their own and any result looked possible. A few substitutions and a break in play for the referee to come across to speak to myself, which to be honest was nothing really, seemed to galvanise us and only some fantastic goalkeeping kept the scores level when Natalie, Hazel and twice Lisa went through, before eventually Jess laid on Hazel for the second.
Though Leamington gave us a few nervy moments and came close to equalising when Cat did well to get in the way of a point-blank shot, we could still have increased the lead and I felt fully deserved the win. Potentially two cup ties and fixtures against the top four all in the next month or so, give extra significance to this victory.
Broughton Rangers 0-1 Worcester City
10/09/06
The game against Broughton Rangers represented a great challenge for the team as we
played higher-graded opponents in a competition where we had never
previously passed the opening round.
However, from the start of the game the ladies played some excellent
football and created some good opportunities. Although the first half was a
close affair, I felt it was us that created the better of the opportunities
with both Annie Highway and Hazel Adams going close, as well as a succession
of corners. At the other end, some excellent defending limited the hosts'
chances and restricted them to mostly long shots.
With around five minutes to go before half time, Hazel ran on to a Loiuse
Holmes through ball and neatly lobbed the ball into the net, it was a
well-taken goal and in honesty, excatly what we deserved at that point.
Half time was a case of making sure the players repeated this level of
performance in the second half, which in the first half was worthy of at
least the one-goal lead.
In the second half, we started poorly and in truth, Broughton pressurised us
the way we had done to them in the first half, though a long shot aside
Jodie Bennett wasn't troubled in goal with ten minutes of the second half gone, and
as a long range free-kick flashed over, a tense seond half looked on.
The team regained their composure from this moment on, and played Louise Holmes narrowly missing a specualtive drive, Natalie Holmes flashing a header
wide and after a goalmouth scamble, Hazel was twice denied by great goalmouth
clearances and later with a superb last ditch tackle and we threatened to add
a second.
It turned out to be a great game played in a good spirit, though stoppages
reflected it was a tough game, and credit to Broughton, they have an
excellent side who never stopped. The magnificent win was well deserved by
the players who earn another trip to Leicestershire to face Loughborough in
the next round.
With another three important players in the form of Diane, Lisa and Emma returning to the fold in the next few weeks the squad now is
arguably at its strongest since I took charge.
Worcester City 0-1 Copeswood Coventry
3/09/06
The game on Sunday proved a tough and close game that I feel the ladies
really deserved something out of. Though we missed Diane, Emma and Hazel,
three players that would improve any side in the league, we defended
relatively well and throughout the game we created some decent chances.
There were no complaints about Copeswoods penalty though and it goes to show
that against the best sides, if you do not take your chances you will get
punished. Copeswood certainly are one of the better sides in the league.
As the game progressed we gradually got more on top and perhaps really
should have taken one of the three excellent chances we created in the
second half, though in fairness, Copeswood broke well and created a few good
occasions themselves.
The league results will improve, that is for certain,
as the performance today, coupled with the players that will return will
stand us in good stead for the rest of the season.
Hopefully Lisa will be okay, we are still waiting to hear the extent of her
leg injuries after a 'nasty incident' during the game where she colided with
an opponent after winning a header, obviously we wish her the best and hope
to have her on the field as soon as possible!
So we move on now to next week and the F.A cup tie away at Brouthton Rangers.
Provided that the team make a good account of themselves and play the way
that they have been then I'm sure, whatever the result next week against
higher-graded opponents we will continue in our development as a team and
will be better from the experience of another big game.
After that the
buisness of getting points on the board and putting Worcester City Women
towards the top of the table begins, a challenge I know myself and the
players will relish.
Manager's Review of Season 2005/6
After a tough first season in the West Midlands League division One (South) the Ladies finished a respectable 4th place, and reached the semi-final of the County Cup as well as the League Cup quarter finals.
There were many memorable games and some memorable goals this season shared throughout the team, showing the great team spirit and potential that we have here at the club. The players of the season awards were well spread throughout the team and were thoroughly deserved; however there were many great performances within the team and to single out any one player for particular praise here would be unfair!
Our congratulations go out to Hereford Pegasus for winning the double, I recognize how hard that was to achieve in such a hard league and though we pushed them all the way in a cup quarter final earlier this year, the best team over the course of the season won the league and I think they will continue to be successful in the Premier League next year.
Luckily for us, our exciting young squad and successful reserve team, coupled with the opportunity to recruit new players gives us the opportunity to build over the summer and have a good, hard pre-season, with everything geared towards making a stronger team for next year.
Sadly though, we are losing three exceptional players at the end of this season. Laura Colley, Ginette Hoskins and Steph Smits are all leaving and I thank them for their tremendous service throughout the year, I have found all three to be excellent members of the squad and although it’s sad to lose them, I respect their decisions. We all wish them all the very best for the future!
Our thanks again to all the committee members, David Dunham and The Worcester Standard, for all their support and also to the board of Directors at Worcester City Football Club.
Plans are well under was for a successful second season at this level, coupled with the chance once again to play in the Women's FA Cup An exciting 2006/7 season lies ahead…
Cheers,
Paul Hennessey
